EvaluatINN' 2010

2010 has been another incredible year for the Drop Inn organisation. We have seen some enthusiastic new volunteers step forward and get involved, we have won some more awards for the work we have done in our community, and the whole organisation is moving in different direction again with the potential of going into festivals and live events.

We are getting recognised on a wider level and being approached by new people to deliver our great services. The biggest celebration of the year was our 10 year Birthday! We are still here and we are accelerating into the future.
We have also had celebrities like The Petebox, MC Spyda and Nicky Blackmarket perform under our roof.

2011 is looking to be as exciting with the new website planned and the big festival events. If anyone wants to come and have a look around you know where we are. Unit 1, Derwent Street, Belper, DE56 1UQ. Please come for a cup of tea :)
We'll see you all in the next decade!

HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL THE PEOPLE INVOLVED AND EVERYONE THATS HELPED US ALONG THE WAY !!

Soundcloud Profile

The Drop Inn has set up a Soundcloud Profile for sharing the music the young people have produced on the music production workshops.

There is quite a few different tracks, that are produced to different states. There is some that are only intro's and others that are complete tracks. It's the perfect place to share our work in progress and finished music tracks.

We are planning on running competitions in the new year for re-mixes of different tracks we've produced for some of the media projects.

Looking forward to sharing our music.

New Website Concept

The new website is currently being designed. It's only at the sketch stage at the moment, but there is some amazing ideas coming out.

This will be the 3rd generation of website we've had. This one is planned to have an online radio station and an online game. If what is being planned is all part of the final 3rd generation website it will take a while to design and build. We will keep you updated as soon as the work starts in the new year.

Christmas Party 2010

YES you guys knew it! It happens every year. Even though ll the staff were still feeling a bit special from their own first Christmas meal / drink.

The usual silly party games came out, with pass the parcel of forfeits and other funny relay games. It was a great night. Hope everyone enjoyed it! We'll torture you again with the silly games next year. Hope you all have a good Christmas, and we'll see you all in the New Year.

Music Production - Update

The music Production workshops had been changed to drop in session were the young people can call in when they like and work on their tracks, with the tuesdays still continuing for any required technical support with shookz.

The tracks that had been finished were meant to have a hearing on the fridays 'Safe Rave' unfortunately we couldn't fit it in properly. So we are definitely going to exhibit it at the next 'safe rave' in January !!

Drop Inn Staff Christmas Meal 2010

This is the first Christmas Meal we have had at The Drop Inn, We thought it would be a nice idea because all the staff deserve to celebrate such a good year.

We've had The Youth Christmas Parties for years, so It was nice for the staff to also celebrate Breaking up for Christmas. We booked a table to Bengal Blues, then went to the Jasper and Conner Show at The Cross Keys across the road.
It was a really great night and we will definitely be doing it next year!

Festival Proposal Update

We have been approached by The Bearded Theory Group to put on a stage at their festival over 3 days. We have also been selected as a local charity to be supported by the festival.

It's all exciting news to start next year with! We'll be looking at playing bands, dj's and also have a huge selection of workshops.
Fingers Crossed :)

NICKY BLACKMARKET "Safe Rave"

This was the most talked about and the best 'Safe Rave' so far!

We had 112 Young People attend and everyone was inside dancing.

Nicky Blackmarket is one of the best known Drum and Bass DJ's and plays all over the world.

He Said "What You guys do down here is amazing!"

The Drum and Bass Legend Himself posing in front of the Drop Inn Logo

The Safe Raver pose.

Some of the Young member's who had took part in the DJ Workshops from last year, had become resident DJ's at the 'safe rave' and supported Nicky Blackmarket this time. To some of them this is their idol, so they couldn't believe they got the opportunity to DJ along side him!

Some of the Young People having pictures with this celebrity after the show.

A Young member jumping higher and higher as the music breaks into Drum and Bass madness.

All the atmosphere of a real rave now, but in a completely safe environment.

Mr Blackmarket got taken back to the day of playing in tiny warehouses instead of huge hyper clubs and festivals.

And he loved it, the crown were so close to him and he was loving the response!

Some of the 112 Young people in attendance. The crowd was going wild! It was an amazing atmosphere!

The best and most used photo example already of the 'Safe Raves.'

Kit was the photographer who travelled across from wales to cover this 'safe rave.' He took some amazing pictures!

Sponsor a Christmas Tree Light

This year Belper Rotary Club decided to set up a sponsor a christmas tree light for £5, to send messages to lost loved ones. This is such a nice idea. The money raised goes to selected local Charities, and the Drop Inn was one of those charities. Thank You again for thinking of us and supporting us Rotary Club.

Radio Proposal

Endeavor are looking at large amounts of funding for their own radio project. They are interested in seeing the pilot work at the drop inn first, then want us to help them set their own up, so they can communicate and share ideas and projects between different communities up and down the country.

Our new website will have it's own online radio station build in. This will be the first stage, then once the shows start broadcasting we'll be able to start training other people up to set up online radio stations.

Anti_bullying Film

we have been granted some funding to put a project together with Filmcity. The young people have been thinking about ideas the last few weeks on how they can make an anti-bullying film. They decided on a drama instead of a play style piece.

The story line of this film is very hard hitting, but it was agreed it had to be to get the serious message across. This will be the forth film we have produced with Filmcity. The others are all mockumentary / documentary dramas all with a sense of humor.
However this one is the first serious one, so will require a lot of thought.

The film production time is really tight as well, we have to have is all finished and edited by the end of January. The team will be meeting every tuesday and some wednesdays for this project.

Festival Proposal

Continuing our radical plans for future fundraisers, and with the inspiration from the opportunity of screening a short film at Glastonbury festival, We have come up with some more ideas.

We have approached a few local festivals to see what we can offer to them as an organisation, from youth DJ's to workshops and young volunteers.

Currently we have heard back of Mychoons and The Bearded Theory Festival.

Wednesday 8 December 2010

Epic Awards Nomination

Please Click here to nominate us for this Innovation Epic Arts award. Some of the crazy innovative projects we have ran in the past should get more recognized, then hopefully we'll be able to run a lot more crazy exciting projects.

Safe Rave Charity Box update

The young people in the Drop Inn have managed to raise nearly £100 toward getting Nicky Blackmarket (The A List DJ performing in two weeks).

They raised the money through the charity box labeled for the safe rave and selling burgers and hot food on the drop in open nights.

Well done to all the people who helped raise enough extra for this huge name DJ.

District 56 remix

We are planning to take the 'District 56' short film and remix it adding new scenes, some animation shorts and also a hidden remix of the music video at the end of the original film. The animation will be made to illustrate some of the interviews, using the interviews as the narration.
We are also getting the young people on the music production course to do a remix of the original sound track 'living in the wrong time lad.' The song featured in the music video at the end of the film. Once the track is remixed we will choreograph a dance routine and remix the actual video to fit. We are looking at starting this after the new year.

Skate Day 1

We decided to get the skate ramp out for a small amount of people. All the people were over 18, and two of which were the young adults that build the ramp. The ramp had not been skated for a while, so we planned some repaired ready for when the general public can skate it.

It was really good to see the ramp in use again, it's been used as a stage and room partition loads more than an actual skate ramp.
Hopefully we will be able to get the ramp out occasionally and have regular meeting to arrange a plan of action on what to do with the ramp.

Safe Rave 2010 [7] - Aura & Archie

Grime 'Safe Rave' by thedropinn
Grime 'Safe Rave' a photo by thedropinn on Flickr.

The Grime 'Safe Rave' saw some local talent step on the stage. We had booked Natty, but unfortunately he couldn't make it.

On the day we had still not sorted a Grime Dj replacement, it was looking to have to change the style of music despise the Youth being really excited for the grime genre.

Last minute we managed to book and secure Aura and Archie, two young local DJ's who were happy to come along and play grime. There was a huge turn out. Right in front of the speakers we plugged a couple of Mics in for the MC's. There must have been at least 20 young people passing the Mic around taking it in turns to spit their bars (Rap their lyrics). It was a very different atmosphere to usual, but it seemed to attract a lot of young people still.

We will be doing another grime one in the future, it was a nice difference.

Fundraiser ideas for 2011

We have decided to do some radical fund raisers in 2011. Some of the idea's include a Skydive and a cross country run.
We would like to host another Casino night, and loads more events.
The Drop Inn is only secure for 6 months into next year so we all need to start thinking of how to raise some funding for the centre to keep it open. Keep the ideas coming in, and we'll see what we can do!

Monday 8 November 2010

Charity Box for 'safe rave'

We are using one of the charity boxes to raise some money for Nicky Blackmarket. The A list DJ name we have booked for the Last 'safe rave' 2010. We are hoping to raise as much as we can, the target is £100. Good Luck everyone!

Music Production [8]

We started this session early so the new comer could do more on his grime track. It came along way in two weeks and very little time, either we've got another natural or grime music is too easy to make? He has picked the program up really quickly, but now his home work is to go away and write some lyrics for his track. Looking forward to hearing how this one turns out!

The dubstep group spent the whole session playing with their bassline but it sound loads clearer now. The techno / house / drum and bass group went back to make some changes to their drum and bass track using what techniques they had experimented with last week on their house experiment.

The other group we hear was out sharing their unfinished track amongst friends and didn't turn up again, hopefully they will return to finish their track.

Environmental Project [end]

This project has ended for now, we will re-visit this next year.

We have adopted the land in front of the entrance to our yard. So the idea is to build a wall and a small garden once the weather improves next year. The we can produce an environmental education wall for the public to see, it might even become part organic?

Monday 1 November 2010

Charity Boxes

We are still looking at raising funds from the smallest to big project funds. The latest addition to the Drop Inn Charity is 5 collection boxes, please please support us if you see one of our boxes and donate what you can. We are setting up a fund raising campaign in the next month, which will hopefully share a few different idea's to raise money for running costs. Thank You.

Tuesday 26 October 2010

Music Production [7]

We had a taster session. The drum ad bass group that are half way through there track didn't turn up, so we let one of the other youth's have a go instead. He did really well for the first session, He started making a grime track.

The other groups are coming on great, the techno group haven't finished the techno track but started playing round with another new track for another experiment with the new plug-ins.

The dubstep group have a full track just needs a few adjustments making, the two basslines in parts are competing with each other. The rest of it sound wicked though!

Frankenstein Put on Weight

Frankenstein has evolved again. Adding some new Wharfedale 400 Watt speakers to sit on the top. It's sounding very crisp and extremely loud!

Tuesday 19 October 2010

Music Production [6]

With one track finished and the others coming along quite nicely we have decided to put in a goal to work towards.
We would like to get as many quality tracks finished to play at the last 'safe rave' of the year, in front of the A list name!

The progression of the tracks are really coming along now. The techno track is sounding pretty cool now, they seem to be really enjoying making a techno track for saying it started off as a laugh, both of them saying they don't really like techno, just metal and drum and bass.

The dubstep track is really coming on now, they spent all this session making the intro. The third group extended their track to over two minute with an intro and a brea down.

Environmental Project [11+12]

The tiles are looking amazing. Everyone is thinking where to go next with this project, and really liking the idea of doing an environmental wall.

While the weather is cold outside we are focusing on finishing the tiles. So it's been decided to continue this project till the tiles are finished. After plan where we want to pick this project up in the New Year.

Saturday 16 October 2010

Hire

We didn't used to entertain the idea of hiring out any of our equipment. However recently we have been approached quite a few time and started to say yes. We haven't sorted an official booking form out yet, but we will have it sorted soon. There are three different local events coming up of which people are hiring sections of the Frankenstein sound system. Once the booking forms are created, we should be able to hire it out even more!

Support ideas and donations

Weare looking at different ways to raise our own funds for next year. We are only secure until early 2011. Up until this point The Drop Inn doesn't really get noticed as a Youth Charity, we are asset rich but very cash poor. We are trying to set up way so people can kindly show their support by making small donations, hopefully all the potential small donations and sponsorships will secure a future for The Drop Inn. For more information please Click here!!

Thank You

Music Production [5]

The first track is completed and sounds mint. The techno track is starting to come together but in early stages still. The second group producing the dubstep track have been given loads of new plug-ins from Ben, making the track sound very professional. The dubstep one has been extended with an intro and breakdowns, another few weeks and it might be finished?
The Third group creating the other Drum and Bass track have started filling there track out and ordering the way they want it, it's coming along loads. Can't wait to hear them all finished, it's getting exciting now.

Re:space [6] Full Monty: part 2

Following all the plans for a huge make-over of most of the Drop Inn, we have added some more big improvements! The double doors have now been painted and look really smart. The work on the inside has also moved along with the Cinn (Projection space) roof being strengthened and all the storage on top has been sorted into specific areas. It's all looking more organized and very tidy now. Our target was to have completely cleaned up the main space by the new year, it's looking really likely. Shush and Andrea have been working really hard they deserve everyones praise!

Freshers 2010 postponed

Before Christmas it is looking to be too busy to run the Year 7 + 8 Freshers on a Tuesday night. We have the Music Production workshops running with the environmental Project on Tuesdays and the Film Project Starting on a Wednesday night which has been planned to start in a few weeks and through November and December.
So we have decided to pick this project up in the new year, so we have time to run it properly. It will have to become Freshers 2010-2011.

Friday 8 October 2010

New Security Grills

The office and Jamjar have been made completely secure with some new steel bars for the windows and doors.

Tuesday 5 October 2010

Music Production [4]

The group that was ahead have started playing around making a techno track now, after getting 95% complete with their first track, it just need tweaking and mixing down, so all the audio tracks are the right level. They have worked at an incredible speed and it sounds great.
The other drum and bass group have changed their bassine for the 3rd time now, but are very happy with the way it's sounding and they are learning some very different things about the program, through taking their time getting it how they want it to sound.
The dubstep track has now got two basslines also, but they are layered on top of each other, making it sound heavy. Next week they are thinking about what filters and plug-ins they can add breaking the bassline up a bit.

Environmental Project [9+10]

Last week on the environmental project (Re-using) everyone started to move on from the glass painting. Finishing their glass paintings off with some really nice results. Now everyone is moving onto painting some tiles we've found. The youth have creative freedom over what they want to put on their tiles, with a focus on trying to make a larger art piece, like an environmental wall.

The wall will be artwork promoting environmentally friendly ideas and make out of re-used things around the Drop Inn.

Friday 1 October 2010

National Older peoples Day

A mix of older and younger people meet up at the Drop Inn to celebrate National Older Peoples Day. There was a screening of the latest Filmcity, linking lives and Drop Inn film collaboration. There was a nice selection of food and live entertainments from At Baker and Jasper. As part of the District 56 intergenerational multi media project, Jasper ad Adie performed the musical section of the original film live on stage, along with their version of "Dear Albert."

We saw some more new faces in attendance, it was a really enjoyable day of celebrations for all. Thank You to all who turned up and the people who organized it.

Tuesday 28 September 2010

Music Production [3]

The group that were slightly ahead are already near to the last stage of mixing down their first track. The other two groups are really enjoying it. The ones producing the Dubstep track are happy with their bassline and are starting to build the rest of the track now. The other drum and bass track is still in early stages but sounding great.

The response from the rest of the youth supporting their dj peers was absolutely incredible, everyone was going mental for them!
This new direction for the "Safe Raves" will only get better, we are currently running music production courses, again with Shookz, with the aim being to mix their own music tracks into their sets by the last "Safe rave" this year in December. We are also looking at teaching a small team how to set the sound system up and control all the lights, with the future focus of the "Safe Raves" being it will all be Youth lead! There has been some new faces appear on this project. The focus is still on glass painting for a few weeks. Everyone really enjoyed the short project last year, so we're running it for a bit longer this year while people are enjoying it.

Environmental Project week 6

Until we get some funds together we cant build the proposed recycling plant. The Young people voted for there favorite and most practical design. We'll try and create a full 3D model of it if we can, nearer the time of construction. It's been a good Summer project, but for the next few weeks it's going to change and focus on the re-using side of materials.

Starting next week with some glass painting, a simple idea to re-use old jars for decorations.

Freshers Plan 2010

We had such a good response last year for the year 7 + 8 Freshers. We are planning to run it this year as well.
Most of the entertainment will be the same with Arts and Crafts, Glass Painting, and other activities to get to know each other and the staff. This year we are thinking of adding Music Production to the activity list.

Tuesday 31 August 2010

Environmental Project week 5

The designs for methods of recycling our waste is coming on. Some look really technical and others are simple methods.
The Youth were asked to think about a container to put different types of rubbish in to recycle, this container has to fit in our space (Yard) outside and also appeal to the youth, and hopefully inspiring them to recycle. The unit also has to have a form of transport so we can take the waste to the local recycling bins.
The brief also included the idea of making the transportation system and actual structure out of recycled things we have in our centre.

The designs have started to take some shape and look really inspiring, now the young people have been asked over the next few weeks to start pricing up any other materials we might need to make the recycling centre.

Once the recycling centre and system is in place we are hoping to cut out waste down, cut the price of bin collections down, and inspire other people to recycle ...

Event Planning

We've decided this year to stop trying to put on over 18 nights for fund raisers for the youth. It's confusing some people as to what the centres focus is and we don't want people to think we allow people to drink on the under 18 nights.
We operate a strict alcohol and drug harm minimization policy, and we don't want to lose community and authorities trust over fund raise events.
We are looking at hosting any future over 18's fund raiser nights in other venues. With the exception of our re:union event. This way people will hopefully understand the difference between over and under 18 events.

Tuesday 24 August 2010

Environmental Project week 4

After collecting a selection of different types of recyclable rubbish, while making a survey of what the most common discarded waste was then recycling it we discovered quite a lot.

Now the question is how can we become a more green town?

How can we Become a Greener Youth Centre?

And how can we inspire others to become more green?

We haven't got the answers but there is some really good ideas coming from the Young People at The drop Inn.
They have come up with some designs to make it easy to recycle our thousands of cans and other recyclable materials.
One of the other ideas was to start making a documentary of the progress they are making and also and environmental awareness video.

All the manageable waste we collected over the last Tuesday has been sorted into the different categories and bagged up. There was more plastic than anything else. Now these bags of waste will be taken to the recycling bins at Morrisons down the road.

Everyone said "It felt good." Everyone was happy they had taken some tiny steps towards cleaning our community up and making a different towards it being a greener place.

Twitter Account?

Does anyone think it's worth The Drop Inn setting up a twitter account and linking it to the Blog and Facebook account. It seems to be the only social networking site we're not on that people use. See what happens with the demand for it, we'd appreciate any advice on it, because no-one on our team really use it. Cheers

Build a Band (Coming Soon)

We are strating to run "Build a Band" nights on Wednesdays at The Drop Inn. I will start a few weeks into the music production project. We are aiming for the young people learning the production side to help record samples and songs for the young people playing in the bands. The first few sessions will be set up for people to have a jam. Eventually we would like to create a Drop Inn band which will support other bands on future under 18 band nights.

Future Youth Environment project

The Drop Inn Environmental project will be an ongoing project. The first stage will be doing research for the local environment, focusing on how to recycle more at the Drop Inn and become more environmentally friendly. We'll be looking at reusing things and reducing our waste.
The first few weeks will involve litter picks and documenting what's the most common types of waste people through out, then look at innovative ways of helping recycle or reusing them to minimize waste. We'll keep you updated on this projects progress.

The Drop Inn is in need of some more regular revenue funding, so we have make up some begging letters to send around local companies looking for more official sponsorships. If you know of any companies that are looking to support independent charities please let us know. We'll post the breakdown of sponsorships from a week to a month, 3 months, 6 months, and a year.
Hopefully we'll find some more sponsors for security. Thank You x

Attic Proposal

We were looking at designing a new room at The Drop Inn. We are looking at the possibility of building and upstairs room, which would lead up from the back of the current games room, and be situated just over the bar area. This room just referred to as the Attic for now would have all the consoles and the smart board up there with loads of bean bags dotted around. It would be like an expansion to the games room but for all the digital games, like an arcade. We could also use this room as another training room like the CINN (Projection space) room. We are currently through the process of trying to draw up some plans of how it might work. It would be amazing to create as a project and new space for 2011!

Project Planning

The staff have been bouncing some really good idea's around for future projects. We are starting to long projects over the summer. One will be called 'Future Youth' which is an environmental project, and the other will be a music production and broadcasting project, which will see the return of Shookz! If this isn't exciting enough, We are looking at starting under 18 band nights towards the end of summer one Thursday night a month, and also hosting Derbyshires biggest U.V party when the nights get darker early as a fund raiser for more U.V products. We have also started planning a 'Youth Image + Style Design' project based on stereotype groups and how Youth fashions create different Youth Groups, We would be looking at designing and showcasing some new Youth fashion idea's designed by our Youth People. These projects are going to shape the new directions The Drop Inn is heading for this next decade!

None of the staff ended up in the stocks, which was probably a good thing. This second night has 5 DJ's lined up for the live entertainment.

STALLS:
The Friday morning which opened at 10am was for the Linking Lives groups. There was a selection of stalls to walk around, and some exhibition stands. We were also serving tea, coffee and cakes.

DANCE PERFORMANCE: A few Young Members of the Drop Inn led by Bradley performed their first dance routine to the Linking Lives groups. The whole dance was choreographed by Bradley, who found inspiration to do this through attending the Dance workshops. It took this group weeks of hard work to put this dance together. It looks very impressive, so well done everyone!

RADIO DEMONSTRATION AND SINGING: The crowd watching the Dance performance.

There was also entertainment from Ant B, who entertained everyone with some singing.

In the afternoon Tom and Paul did a radio demonstration, which included an intergenerational element. The Older generation stepped up to interview the Younger generation about some of the issues and misunderstandings they may have with each other.

ENGLAND GAME: At the start of the evening We screened the England Game on the Projector for the Youth.

JASPER & CONNOR return to Belper to please their fan club again. They opened the live entertainment in style. They will definately be returning for future gigs. To book them please ring JASPER on: 07403 361310
